Our friend Grace set a tough (for me, anyway) Form Challenge this week at dVerse Poets. It’s called a Seguidilla and…
The Seguidilla is:
• stanzaic, written in any number of 2 part septets. (7 lines)
• syllabic, 7-5-7-5 : 5-7-5 per line. There is a slight pause between L4 and L5 suggesting L4 should be end-stopped.
• rhymed by assonance xAxABxB or xAxABAB. x being unrhymed. True rhyme is generally not used.
• composed with a volta or change in thought between L4 and L5.
(I note that assonance is preferred over rhyme but, umm…I just can’t; and besides, the sample provided at the site rhymes, sooo…)
Not really my thing but I’m giving it a whirl:
———[||]———
Inescapable
Things I wish I’d left behind
haunt me to this day
denying me any rest;
chasing sleep away.
Might there still be hope?
Maybe I’ll just kneel and pray,
do my best to cope.

Nailed it! (what do you mean it’s not your thing?)
Those things can bite and ruin our sleep. We can all do our best to cope. Thanks for joining in.
This is heartfelt Ron. Yes those things haunt us. But keep hope, there is always ways to cope.
“Do my best to cope.” Mission impossible at times, but we crawl on, like snails with a heavy load! 🐌
Bravo Ron, you did it! Counting syllables is habit forming. Once you have done a few, you can’t stop! I really enjoyed your Seguidilla ☺️
Sounds like there is plenty of cause to hope! I noticed plenty of rhymes in the examples so I just went for it, I think you did a great job.
Nicely done, Ron, and prayer-like. You’ve said so much in so few words. I often feel haunted by things I wish I’d left behind too.
Best I’ve read so far. Cheers!
A stellar seguidilla, Ron. Rhyme over assonance anytime!
Pretty nice coping mechanism …..
I haven’t posted yet, still struggling with the format, think you nailed it!
hope you find peace and deep sleep soon 🙂
This is gorgeously rendered, Ron! No doubt, there are often times when things from the past haunt us and keep us awake at night. 💝
There is so much that we carry with us.. coping is not that bad really.
