Sevenling (my mother knew)

Sevenling (my mother knew) *

My mother knew stenography, enjoyed
a highball now and then, and would have
run off with Willie Nelson if he asked.

She was born on Valentine’s Day. I wasn’t.
She always remembered my birthday until
she had to give up remembering forever.

Write this down: Monday’s child is…

  1. And now you remember hers. A tender tribute!

And yes, you with the pretty face – I could write down the whole of that verse, having been told with delight by my mother, many times, that I was born on the Sabbath Day – lucky me!

  2. My first husband was born on Valentine’s Day – but he wasn’t much of a Valentine. I love the touching lines:
‘She always remembered my birthday until
she had to give up remembering forever.’

  3. I knew stenography, I’d have run off with Willie, and I was born just before midnight of Feb. 13! Your mother and I had much in common, I’m sure. My own mother gave up remembering forever, and I pray it doesn’t happen to me!

  4. My first marriage at age 21, was on Valentine’s Day. It lasted three years. Bittersweet. Maybe that’s why I’m not too keen on Valentine’s Day anymore.
