What I’ve learned is this: nothing seen can be unseen. Some things can be almost forgotten (if they must and if you try hard enough) but—sooner or later—something will remind you. So what I try to do is this: connect the ugly to the beautiful. When I think about some lover, lost long ago, I remind myself how lucky I am that she set me free to find the truer love I love today. When I think I might be dying, I think about getting together again with all my dead friends and lovers.
