Betrayal

Betrayal is a small gray box
on a midnight bedside table.

Two plastic tubes hiss,
push air, but fail to inflate
useless hungry lungs.

Late at night they conspire
and I am helpless,
lying in the dark,
listening to
mechanized promises
but hearing only whispered lies.
