Sevenling (she stared straight)

Thanks to Mish for hosting today’s Poetics Challenge to write something with an “Eyes” theme over at dVerse Poets…

Sevenling (she stared straight)

She stared straight ahead
repeated the oath
swore to tell the truth

He asked his questions
listened to her answers
lowered his gaze

Life. No parole.

  1. I do like sevenlings, and this one is masterful, feeling tanka-like. Hopefully the bitch got what her eyes, not her words, conveyed.

  2. Don’t know if you are watching ‘The Undoing’ on HBO but your poem reminds me of the tense situations with lots of downcast eyes … Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant and the always amazing Dennis Sutherland.

  3. Makes you — or me at least — wonder if guilt or innocence is more determined by the “performance” in the courtroom than actual guilt or innocence (said from a person who worked in courtrooms for close to 20 years.) Nicely done, Ron.

  4. You’ve actually made me wonder who will be serving the sentence. I suspect this might not be a courtroom but a domestic situation. The clever thing is, it could be interpreted as either.

  5. This chilled me right through. I don’t think it was because of what she might or might not have done, but the stark finality of it, decided on what one judge thought he/she saw in her eyes. I find that scary.
