No Face Anymore

I know why
I have to wear a mask
all day long, these days:
it’s because I love you

and I want you to live
and I don’t want you to
kill me
while I’m shopping.

But I’m home alone now
and it’s after midnight and
I don’t know why I have to
hide behind another mask,
keep my mouth shut, suffer
the humiliation of mechanics
just to enjoy a few hours
of untormented sleep, the
simple inhalations of the
free, just to attain what
everyone else gets without
electrified compression,
without peerless pressure
to inhale, exhale, repeat.

I guess I shouldn’t complain,
but please; explain it again.
Tell me again. Just this once.
Please. Why me?
