Time Will Tell, I Guess

(194 Days & Counting)

Like all writers, I’ve had waits and waits to hear from publishers and waits and waits for actual publication.  I’m pretty used to it by now.

There are, occasionally, going to be delays over-and-above the usual and, more often than not, the publisher is kind enough to let the writers know.  Not always, though.

I submit the following (which I have endeavored to keep anonymous) as a case in point, illustrating what occasionally happens when these updates are not forthcoming, and the writer has to feel like a pest making repeated inquiries.

Dear XXXXXXXXXX Editors,

Please consider my poem “XXXXX” for inclusion in the upcoming XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

This piece has not been previously published, nor is it currently under consideration elsewhere.

I have also included a brief Bio following the submission, which I will be happy to rewrite if the form /content does not meet your expectation.

Thanks for considering my work. I look forward to hearing from you, and to reading the anthology!

Sincerely,

Dear XXXXXX & XXXX

1) Thanks for acknowledging receipt of my submission.

2) I don’t how this happened, but apparently I messed up 2 line (stanza) breaks. Sorry for the error. I hope it doesn’t sour your deliberations.

Thanks again for your consideration and apologies for the added headache. I’m usually far more diligent about checking my work before submitting.

I look forward to hearing from you, and to reading the anthology when it’s out!

Sincerely
–Ron. Lavalette

No other changes but it should look like this:

Hi Ron.

I read over your poem, and we will be publishing it in XXXXXXX anthology. The XXXXXXXX anthology has been pushed for publication in April because we literally received at least 100 or more submissions. April is also National Poetry month, so it will make a great time to release our collection. Be sure to follow us on Facebook XXXXXXXXXXX so you can see all of our updates for the anthology and new calls for submissions.

We apologize again for your wait.

Have a great day!

Sincerely,
XXXXXXXXXX

I’m very happy and grateful for your decision to include my poem. I look forward eagerly to publication.
I don’t know how I hadn’t already looked for you on Facebook, but it’ll certainly be easier to track the release date there, so thanks again.

Sincerely,

Ron: Any Updates?
Any update on potential release date for XXXXXXXX?

XXXXXXXX
We are pushing for May. We both have full time jobs, so we have to work around that schedule….And we are a small company, so we may not publish as fast as larger companies. Our hope is to have it out this month though. No specific date yet. We apologize. But we know that you will be pleased with the book when it’s finished. Thanks for asking
