Promise

Promise
(for Carl Edward Reardon III)

I’ve been doing something
different this year, Carlos;
doing it
just a little differently and I’m
thinking you’d like it

if only
you could have just hung out
to see us both get old.

You’ve been gone a while
and I’m sorry
it took so long.

I’ve been
looking into that small box
we found once; the one I
wrote about ages ago,
long before I could.

There’s a lot more stuff
in that box now, Carlos.

I’ll bring it with me.
